The milestones

Since 2008, Uwezo has reached 39,766,018 beneficiaries, including 20,643,471 females and 19,219,758 males. Of these, 17,816,677 (44.7%) are direct beneficiaries across 159 districts and 26 regions in Tanzania.

Through citizen-led learning assessments, Uwezo identified a learning crisis, revealing that 62% of Class 3 students could fluently read Kiswahili, but only 48% of Class 7 students could read a simple Class 2-level English story.

These findings drive engagement with policy actors and communities to address the crisis. In collaboration with the Government of Tanzania, Uwezo trains teachers and volunteers to support children's learning.

Uwezo's conducted research study in 2020-2021 on parental and community engagement in education. The result informed the design of the government's national parent empowerment guidelines and training toolkit, rolled out in 2022. Our contribution was acknowledged as a critical technical partner in the guideline’s development.

Uwezo's supported generating district-level evidence on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) competencies, directly supporting the government's target of achieving 80% FLN proficiency in primary grades under the Education Sector Development Plan (ESDP) 2016/17-2020/21.

Uwezo's supported generating district-level evidence on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) competencies, directly supporting the government's target of achieving 80% FLN proficiency in primary grades under the Education Sector Development Plan (ESDP) 2016/17-2020/21.

Uwezo is widely regarded as credible and collaborative in the fight for equitable learning by 100% of surveyed CSOs through its Uwezo's assessment results and participation in joint advocacy efforts through forums like TENMET and RELI.

As pioneers of the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach contextualized as Jifunze pedagogy embedded in the My Village/Kijiji Changu model, we provide targeted support to children aged 8-17, helping them acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills. By 2023, a total of 143,011 children were supported and mastered the skills in 30–60 days.

Additionally, 93,702 children benefited through community and school libraries, and LGAs are now scaling up the program.

In Tanzania, Uwezo's evidence and advocacy efforts have contributed to significant policy development, including the 2015 "3Rs" curriculum reform, which focuses on Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.

Our evidence-based advocacy also played a role in the adoption of the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) component as a key priority in the Education Sector Development Plan for 2016/17-2020/21.

Uwezo conducted over 19 National Assessments and trained 11,014 volunteers who are engaged in the citizen-led model of improving learning outcomes.

Uwezo have been providing technical support on foundational learning to the Government of Tanzania. Scientifically collected data has informed influential reports, including the World Bank's World Development Report on Education (2018) and UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring Report (2019), underscoring the critical need to address the global learning crisis.
