Teaching at the Right Level: Transforming Lives Through Jifunze Pedagogy
Education is not one-size-fits-all, especially for children struggling with foundational skills. Uwezo Tanzania’s Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach, adapted as Jifunze Pedagogy, has redefined how literacy and numeracy are taught, focusing on what children know rather than their age or grade level.
A Revolutionary Approach to Learning
The Jifunze Pedagogy tailors teaching to meet children where they are. This transformative approach has helped 143,011 children aged 8-17 acquire foundational literacy and numeracy skills in just 30-60 days. By prioritizing individualized learning, Uwezo ensures no child is left behind, regardless of their starting point.
Expanding Learning Beyond Classrooms
The program’s success extends beyond classrooms, with 93,702 children benefiting from access to community and school libraries. These libraries create safe spaces for children to explore, learn, and grow. Through partnerships with communities and schools, Uwezo fosters an ecosystem where learning thrives.
Scaling Success Through Local Leadership
Uwezo’s collaboration with Local Government Authorities (LGAs) has scaled the Jifunze Pedagogy across Tanzania, empowering local leaders to champion the program. This sustainability model ensures the approach reaches more children, creating long-term educational impact.

For children struggling to grasp basic skills, age or grade often becomes a barrier to progress. Uwezo Tanzania’s innovative Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach, contextualized as Jifunze Pedagogy, offers a groundbreaking solution by focusing on what children actually know rather than where they should be.
By 2023, this transformative approach had reached 143,011 children, equipping them with foundational literacy and numeracy skills in just 30-60 days. The impact extended beyond classrooms, with 93,702 children benefiting from access to community and school libraries. These efforts created safe learning spaces and ignited a culture of curiosity and knowledge.
The success of TaRL has prompted Local Government Authorities (LGAs) to adopt and scale the program across Tanzania. The methodology not only addresses learning gaps but also empowers communities to take ownership of their children’s educational journeys.
