By working closely with government institutions, civil society organizations, development partners, researchers, media, and education stakeholders, the programme bridges the gap between research, policy, and practice, ensuring that decisions affecting education are informed by credible evidence.

The programme is an acclelerated learning approach that uses the Jifunze model by grouping children according to their learning level rather than their age or school grade. This ensures that each learner receives instruction tailored to their needs, enabling faster learning recovery and improved educational outcomes.

By mobilizing communities, government, the private sector, development partners, and individuals, the campaign seeks to expand and sustain school feeding programmes across Tanzania. Through collective action and local resource mobilization, Kikombe cha Ndoto aims to ensure that every child has access to a nutritious meal at school, creating an enabling environment for learning and improving educational outcomes.

Uwezo Tanzania's flagship citizen-led assessment programme generates robust evidence on children's foundational learning.

Uwezo Tanzania's flagship citizen-led assessment programme generates robust evidence on children's foundational learning. It examines whether learners are acquiring the basic skills they need to succeed in school and in life, providing reliable data to inform education policy and practice.

The assessment delivers high-quality evidence that enables governments, development partners, civil society organizations, schools, and communities to identify learning gaps, design targeted interventions, and strengthen foundational learning for every child in Tanzania.

In 2026, Uwezo Tanzania will conduct the Foundational Learning Assessment for Regional Agenda (FLARA), a regional citizen-led initiative implemented jointly with Usawa Agenda (Kenya) and Uwezo Uganda.

ALiVE Program
Action for Life skills and values

ALiVE Program

This is a collaborative initiative that aims to ensure children in East Africa acquire life skills and values in order for them to thrive both during and beyond schooling

 Phase 1 of the initiative kicked off in August 2020 with a three-fold target: i) to develop contextualised and open-source tools, and generate large-scale evidence through household-based assessments; ii) to raise awareness among policymakers, teachers, parents, and youth to better understand and focus on values and life skills;  iii)  to strengthen the capacity and amplify the voice of local experts in East Africa on matters of life skills and values.

Phase 2 of ALiVE (April 2023 – December 2025) focuses on enhancing the capacity of education systems to focus on life skills and values (Pedagogy, curriculum, and assessments), collaboratively develop/adapt contextualised assessment tools for 6–17-year-olds, generate evidence by conducting assessments and collating evidence from other life skills approaches (both in assessments and nurturing); then use the evidence for learning and public policy advocacy.

ALiVE’s vision is that learners in East Africa are equipped with life skills and values to support learning, working, and living in the context of the 21st century. This vision will be achieved through three pathways: System shift, Assessment shift, and a learning hub.

A regional initiative generating evidence on foundational learning with Uwezo Uganda and Usawa Agenda Kenya.

FLARA is a regional learning assessment initiative involving Uwezo Tanzania, Uwezo Uganda, and Usawa Agenda Kenya. The initiative seeks to generate evidence on foundational learning and contribute to the regional education agenda.

The FLARA section will document assessment-related activities, stakeholder consultations, technical engagements, dissemination events, findings, and opportunities for stakeholders to use the evidence to strengthen foundational learning across the region.
